We like a cyclical story, and for the last day of our free giveaways from the vaults, we offer you the intended debut Transgressive release… from The Subways.
The Subways were our favourite live band - we hung around at all of their debut shows at The Buffalo Bar in Islington (in fact where we met and founded the label!) and were blown away by their youthful exuberance, Garage-punk attitude and immense songs.
After a trip to their folks’ house in Welwyn Garden City, we managed to persuade them to let them launch their career, which is now gearing up to their fourth album!
This was recorded by our friend Anne Carruthers in the now destroyed Mute Records in-house studios, out of office hours… and we thought sounded awesome - but knew we had to make a real impact with the first release, so recorded the now classic debut single with Nick Abbott - a three tracker opening with 'At 1AM', the song that defined their early sets, complemented by 'I Want to Hear What You’ve Got To Say' and a re-worked version of 'You Got Me' with the different, now familiar lyrics.
Indeed, the band have re-recorded a new version of the song called "I'm In Love And It's Burning In My Soul" for their forthcoming new album, as Billy from the band explains;
"While reminiscing about the last ten years of the band, the really magical moments we've experienced and all the tracks we've written, I found some REALLY old demos, pre Young For Eternity which we had done with Transgressive Records whilst releasing our first ever single, and this one particular song called 'I'm In Love' popped out at me. As I was just then dealing with recovering from alcoholism, I decided to exercise old demons and rewrite some of the lyrics and ended up with a really passionate, really crazy song that I felt compelled to explore again with Charlotte and Josh. 'I'm In Love And It's Burning In My Soul' is the result of that! It is pure gut and heart!" - Billy Lunn.
These early takes show what it’s all about as a band (or indeed label) starting out - raw, DIY and exhilarating…
Here’s to the next 10 years!
A side = 'I’m In Love'
B side = 'You Got Me'
