Songhoy Blues release new track Barre from forthcoming album Optimisme

Songhoy Blues have today shared new single Barre, the latest stunning track to be taken from their forthcoming third album, Optimisme. The record is out on Friday 23rd October, and can be preordered here

The video was filmed on the streets of Bamako - watch it below.

Talking about the track, Aliou from the band said:

"Barre means change. We need change. In the song we are inviting youth to get involved in politics and government to bring about change because they understand the actual challenges we face today. That’s the only way. The problem in Mali is guys from the 1960s are still around and control everything. It’s like how yesterday gave today a chance, today needs to give tomorrow a chance.

Youth! Let’s rise for this change!
Just as Yesterday knew how to welcome Today,
Just as Spring knew how to welcome Summer,
And Summer knew how to welcome Winter,
Old age must welcome Youth."

This verse describes how we are condemned to respect and accept the cyclical nature of all things. We want the older generation to give space to the new generation. Especially in Mali right now, and to be honest, in Africa in general."

Arguably one of the most successful and exciting bands to emerge from Africa in recent years, their new 11-song, multilingual album Optimisme marks a real musical breakthrough. Musically harder, steeped in deep traditions of classic Malian music and desert blues and fused with an urgent and super-charged sound of now, the album was produced by Matt Sweeney of beloved indie rockers Chavez, who’s worked with a host of celebrated artists including Johnny Cash, Run the Jewels, El-P, Cat Power and Will Oldham, and recorded & mixed by Daniel Schlett (The War on Drugs, Modest Mouse, Ghostface Killah) in Brooklyn, NY.
