Songhoy Blues announce new EP Meet Me In The City

Songhoy Blues have announced their brand new EP, Meet Me In The City. You can listen to its first track, Time To Go Home, now!

The EP features Fela Kuti and Junior Kimbrough covers, and a brand new track co-written with Will Oldham.

One of the most globally successful and exciting acts to emerge from Africa in recent years, and following their breath taking, series-stealing show at this year’s Nile Rodgers curated Meltdown Festival at London’s South Bank, Mali’s Songhoy Blues are making a welcome return.

Available digitally and on limited 12” vinyl, the Meet Me In The City EP features David Ferguson and Blake Mills mixes of Time To Go Home (a new track written for them by Will Oldham, aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy), a cover of Junior Kimbrough’s Meet Me In The City, and a great version of the Fela Kuti & The Africa 70 track Shakara featuring Fela’s son, Femi Kuti.

The track listing of the 12” is as follows:
1. Time To Go Home (Blake Mills mix)
2. Meet Me In The City (Blake Mills mix)
3. Shakara (feat. Femi Kuti)
1. Time To Go Home (David Ferguson mix)
2. Meet Me In The City (David Ferguson mix)

Time To Go Home and Meet Me In the City were originally produced by Matt Sweeney , who first introduced the band to Will Oldham, and recorded in London. Shakara was recorded in Mali and produced by the band, Mark LeVine, Manjul and Anton Pukshansky.

Talking about working with the band, Matt Sweeney said: "I think it's safe to say that the brave poets of Songhoy Blues have a different idea what a 'bad day' is than pretty much all other rock bands. Their music and singing are powerful beyond words. Making a new song with them was a humbling honor and an unforgettable joy."

Additionally, on PBS’ American Masters, Will Oldham said of working with Songhoy Blues: "They are a Malian band that's really trying to make sense of what they've been witnessing, what they've been experiencing, and create or transmit a message to people about what they're seeing and how they're trying to understand it and make change...And to think, well I want them to know that I'm trying to listen and trying to understand, and if I can give voice to some of what they're experiencing, that they might be emboldened by this musical connection."

Having played a short run of U.K. shows in January of this year, which culminated with a sold-out performance at London’s EartH, and being featured as part of the Imperial War Museums impressive and lauded Rebel Sounds exhibition, the band are set to head out on an extensive U.S. headline tour in the autumn.
