Today, Mykki Blanco shares the official music video for their single It’s Not My Choice (feat. Blood Orange), directed by Blood Orange’s Devonté Hynes. Shot on beautiful 16mm film, the video shows Mykki, Dev and friends portraying a carefree, tightly-bonded life in pure, weightless freedom. Watch below.
Of the video and process, Mykki reflects:
"Creating with Dev Hynes as director of this video was as effortless as creating the song together. I have long admired that Dev has never compromised along his musical trajectory, offering us songs that play between disciplines and genres at the wave of a hand. This video was carefree and captured what I feel to be some quintessential summer moments — being with friends, being in nature, and having a sense of poise no matter your own personal thunderstorm."
It’s Not My Choice is the latest single from Mykki’s acclaimed mini-album, Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep, which is out now via Transgressive Records. A soft mid-tempo soul jam that narrates the tug of war that is a dysfunctional relationship, the track sees Mykki Blanco navigating the painful realities of a potential breakup, reflecting then pleading to save their romance and keep the love alive. With production from executive producer FaltyDL reminiscent of the early eighties musical stylings of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald and Anita Baker, It’s Not My Choice finds Hynes crooning melancholically over a lush synth and saxophone laden baseline, leaving the listener musing whether it’s worth it to stay together or allow love to have a change of heart.
Mykki today also announces UK and European live dates for November 2021 with a London show at Village Underground on 10th November as part of the first edition of Pitchfork Music Festival London. These will be Mykki’s first UK live shows in over 2 years. Mykki also performs in Manchester this August as part of MCR Pride Live.
These upcoming performances will provide the opportunity for fans to experience Mykki’s on-stage debut with a full live band set-up that includes instrumentalists and backing vocalists. This new, expanded stage performance will enable Mykki to really do justice to the new music of this next chapter of their career, and fans should also be ready to expect Mykki performing a collection of their past classics with a full live set-up for the first time ever.
