Johnny Flynn has recently undertaken an epic adventure around Bogotá, as part of a new four-part series on Radio 4.
The new series, called The Sound Odyssey, follows TV and radio presenter Gemma Cairney around the world with four British artists, as they learn about global music traditions and participate in musical collaborations with local artists, resulting in four specially-commissioned new pieces of music.
Episode two of the series shows Johnny Flynn head to Bogotá in Colombia, collaborating with Carmelo Torres, the Colombian accordion legend of Cumbia. Gemma Cairney explains what it was like watching Johnny blend his British folk storytelling with the folk sounds of Colombia, claiming that “watching Johnny Flynn tear down language barriers in a studio dripping with sweat in Bogota” was “exhilarating and enriching […] We went for it and experimented, and I think the music we made is fascinating.”
The series starts on September 12, with Johnny Flynn’s episode airing September 19. Read more here, and listen here.
