Our paradYse imprint is starting to build up, what we think is, an impressive catalogue of releases - Loyle Carner, Boniface, Marika Hackman, Blaenavon, Toothless, Cosmo Sheldrake! The latest to follow in their footsteps is Haslemere-based songwriter Bad News Club. His first song, The Painter, was a remarkable introduction, and today we can release the B-side - Absent. The song is still intimate with his familiar mournful vocal and guitar, but adds ethereal drums, haunting violin and ends up bringing to mind Bon Iver, The Antlers or Something In The Way by Nirvana.
"Absent was written after a trip away from home, as an ode to the items I had left behind. Where 'The Painter' was recorded in one-take on my iPhone to capture what I was feeling at that exact time, this song was more complex in both its recording process and the emotions involved. I played and recorded everything over a couple of weeks, and finally everything started to make sense."
At the end of last year I had a conversation with someone I hold very dear in my life. I came home straight after, wrote The Painter and recorded it live in my room onto my phone - and it’s that very first take that you’re hearing.
